Looking Back

There’s a unique mix of laughter and melancholy in the relationships we share with our classmates.

In our school days, sitting side by side at those stiff wooden desks, we felt a sense of camaraderie. Clad in matching uniforms, we bonded over our complaints about teachers and nurtured the same lofty dreams.

With the innocent confidence of youth, we believed that life would reward us fairly. We thought the top achiever would thrive, those who struggled would continue to do so, and hard work would always lead to success.

Yet, life extends far beyond the classroom walls. It acts like a mischievous storyteller, relishing in the twists and turns that catch us off guard.

Years later, we might cross paths at various events—graduations, weddings, funerals, airports, or even unexpectedly in a grocery aisle. In those moments, we face the truths that no one prepared us for.

The student who seldom turned in homework now lives in a luxurious home. The one who racked up awards is still searching for purpose. The shy classmate now commands boardroom meetings, while the former debate champion waits quietly for a chance that seems just out of reach.

We wonder: how did this happen?

No one told us that life doesn’t follow the rules we learned in school. While hard work is important, so is luck. Intelligence matters, but sometimes, who you know can be even more crucial.

Some rise not because they are the best, but because they found themselves in the right place at the right time. Life doesn’t grade us like a test; it rolls the dice, and the results can be bewildering.

Still, there’s a bright side: no matter how life separates us, when classmates gather again, the years seem to vanish.

Titles fade away. Wealth loses its importance.

We laugh about old nicknames and try to remember teachers we promised to never forget but now struggle to name. For a brief moment, we return to a time when we were just young dreamers, before life took its course.
